Sagunto + Castle + Roman Theater + Historical Helmet
- Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Christians ... we speak of Sagunto.
- Excursion to this ancient village where we will visit its historical case, its theater and the ruins of the ancient city.
- Torres de Serrano
We will start the tour in the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady, mosque in its origins and converted into a parish church later, a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. A curiosity, is that its staircases come from material of the Theater of Sagunto. Next to the church we find the Casa dels Berenguer (XIV and XV century), where we will visit a small museum about the costumes worn by actors and actresses who interpreted tragedies and Greek comedies. In this same place we can see the remains of the ancient temple of Diana, in addition to the cistern or mikve of the old synagogue. Next we will cross the Portal de la Sang until the exit of the same one by the other historical door, where we will see the historical location of the Jewish quarter of Sagunto that got to be the most important of the Kingdom of Valencia during the S.XIV and S.XV . When leaving this peculiar neighborhood we enter the Archaeological Museum of the town, where we will see the statues of the main deities (Diana, Mercury and Dionysus), as well as other items of everyday Roman life (coins, inscriptions and amphoras). From this point we will begin the ascent to the ruins of the castle of Sagunto, where numerous civilizations have left their mark. Halfway we find the Roman Theater, the second most important in Spain after the Emerita Augusta (Mérida), with which it has some relationship due to the organization of the Classic Theater Festival in summer ("Sagunt on stage"). This monument was built from the 1st to the 3rd century due to the importance of the city of Sagunto in front of the old Valentia (València) at that time. We will continue the ascent leaving to our left the old Jewish cemetery until arriving at the doors of the castle, of Iberian origin, that reached its maximum splendor in Roman epoch and that conserves rest of other cultures like Visigoths, Arabs, Christians and even of the army of Napoleón , turning it into a set of a great patrimonial wealth. In this place there was resistance against the Carthaginian general Hannibal who tried to subdue the city, which led to the Saguntines preferring to sacrifice their lives rather than surrender. This fact led to Rome being granted the privilege of Roman citizenship.
