8d / 7n the English Way to Santiago de Compostela
It was the preferred route for pilgrims from the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, North of France and above all, by the English and Irish pilgrims.
- In these expeditions some crusaders traveled, who stopped in Santiago to visit the tomb of the Apostle before arriving in Jerusalem.
- Many of them chose the English Way where they found the protection of monasteries and hospitals. The journey of the pilgrims to the tomb of the Apostle started from the ports of A Coruña or Ferrol.
- This route was constituted in the fifteenth century the moment of splendor for this beautiful route, impressively rich in historical - artistic heritage.
Starting point
Arrival on your own to Ferrol.
Itinerary
Día 1
Arrival in Ferrol
- Arrival by own account to Ferrol and accommodation in Ferrol.
Día 2
Ferrol Stage - Neda (14km)
- As today the Compostela church only gives the compostela to pilgrims who have made a minimum of 100 km on foot or 200 km by bicycle, the majority of pilgrims take Ferrol as their starting point, since A Coruña is less than 100 km from the holy city.
- To start this beautiful, but hard road, we must bear in mind that in many occasions it lacks the traditional and indispensable signaling with the yellow arrows; Interestingly, when they exist, they create the insecurity of knowing which direction to take. Therefore, our most important advice is to follow your own intuition, always taking the South direction.
- The first part of the "Camino Inglés" runs through a territory with numerous road infrastructures and large facilities linked to the maritime and military industry. After these preliminary tips, and starting our journey next to the Port of Ferrol das Curuxeiras we will go to the Polígono de A Gándara, being able to enjoy on our route the Castrense Church of San Francisco, the Arsenal or the San Xián Concathedral. Walking parallel to the Ría del Ferrol, we come across the railway line that joins Ferrol with Betanzos and that is overcome by a lower pass. Then we ascend to the monastery of San Martiño de Xubia, which is one of the oldest in Galicia. We continue our way and after passing the Muiño bridge over the Xubia river we enter Neda.
Día 3
Neda - Miño (26km)
- After crossing Neda our next point is Fene, a place famous for its shipyards. From this town the route ascends through the mountain to the edge of the national road.
- You go along a stretch parallel to it and you reach Cabanas, where you can visit the Church of San Martiño do Porto and the Magdalena beach.
- We walk calmly along the promenade and cross the bridge that gives access and leaves us in the beautiful town of Pontedeume.
- From here we will go to Breamo, Buiña, Viadero and Bañobre. At this point we cross the medieval bridge over the Baxoi River and after a few minutes we will reach the first buildings of Miño. The stage finishes in Miño, crossing the Baxoi River by a curious medieval bridge with a single eye.
Día 4
Miño - Betanzos (10km)
- With regard to the landscape, this is the most interesting part of the road, as they pass through a rural, mountainous and solitary territory, dotted with small villages dedicated to livestock.
- We leave Miño along Calle Real and enjoy a wonderful landscape by the sea. We will arrive at Ponte de Porco, and from there to the beautiful temple of San Pantaleón de las Viñas where we will start a steep and dangerous stretch that will take us to the town of Matacabalos and later to Souto.
- Overcome this small section begins the descent to Betanzos, with wide views of the estuary and the marsh area that will allow us to enjoy our way to reach the beautiful Betanzos, which we will access through one of the preserved gates of the wall medieval, crossing the historic center to the meadow of García Hermanos, where is the Arquivo do Reino de Galicia.
- Also, we can contemplate the Shrine of Our Lady of Los Remedios along with one of the most beautiful crosses in Galicia.
Día 5
Betanzos - Mesón do Vento (24 km)
- To continue our route we will leave the urban center of Betanzos through O Rolo street and the As Cascas bridge.
- We will continue our way through the places of O Coto, Campoeiro and Xanrozo, which is then entered in the Abegondo term. Once there, we will cross the bridge of Limiñón; After a pleasant walk along the river we will cross the bridge of Presedo, where we can enjoy the temple of San Antonio de Cos.
- Then we will go in the direction of Francos, Bocelo and Vilardel. Once arrived in A Malata, past Monte, Fontela and Vizoño, the itinerary goes into the mountain until you reach the point where the two variants of the "Camino Inglés" meet in the municipality of Mesía, to finally reach Mesón do Vento.
Día 6
Mesón do Vento - Santa Cruz de Montaos (16 km)
- This last stage is through a rural road in a serene environment with gentle slopes. Starting in Bruma, we pass through O Seixo, Carreira, Mámoas and A Carballeira, starting a stretch through the mountain that leads to the place of A Rúa.
- Leaving behind the mill of Trabe and the bridge of O Cubo, continue towards Outeiro de Abaixo, where you take a tree-lined path that leads to the church of San Xulián de Poulo, in Outeiro de Arriba.
- Passed to Senra and A Rúa, the Way arrives at Carballo, crosses the place of Casanova de Pereiro and crosses the Bridge of Ponte Pereira, of possible medieval origin, and already close to our stage finish today in Santa Cruz de Montaos.
Día 7
Santa Cruz de Montaos - Santiago (24 km)
- We begin our last stage undertaking a route towards Baxoia, which will lead us finally to Sigüeiro, in the municipality of Oroso. We will leave Sigüeiro on Calle Real, facing this situation by standing on the right shoulder of the road and walking along a dirt path that runs parallel to the highway. In this way, we arrive at Sionlla, from there we can already see Compostela.
- The stage runs parallel to the river until A Barciela, passes through the polygon of Tambre towards Meixonfrío and enters the urban core of Santiago by the Cruceiro de Coruña.
